Fake Busy Culture: Why Workers Are Scheduling Midnight Emails

Forget staying late at the office — the new way to look hardworking is to send emails at midnight. Many professionals are deliberately scheduling messages outside of work hours to appear extra committed.

The trick works because visibility has gone digital. Managers may not see who stays late, but they do notice timestamps. An email ping at 11:59pm sends the message that the employee is dedicated — even if the message was written hours earlier and simply scheduled to send.

Critics say the habit is fueling toxic competition. Instead of focusing on results, workers are wasting time on appearances. Employees feel pressured to “perform commitment” rather than actually deliver better work.

Still, for career climbers, fake busy culture has become an unspoken strategy. Until companies shift their focus to outcomes, the midnight email trend won’t disappear any time soon.
